1.) Which aspects of Japanese schools do you think work best for educating children?
Discipline and culture. I do want my children to have their own cultural background deep inside and at the same time are disciplined in Japanese way.
Especially, for my family's case, Buddhism is quite important aspect of education.
2.) Which aspects of American schools do you think work best for educating children?
Higher education like MBA course. American system of education emphasize how you can think and discuss logically. Also, through many group works, students develop their communication skills. Also, I believe American system like to educate "how-to" side of business more than academic side.
3.) Do American or Japanese students seem better educated? Why?
In this modern meritocratic world, those who got American style education are likely to have higher position and salary in business world. As for technical skills and science world, I am not sure but I prefer Japanese style of education.
4.) Do you have any concerns about the social atmosphere in schools of either nation?
I am concerning about diminishing number of children in Japan. Diminishing number might affects the education system itself.
I only know business school education course for more than ten years ago and am not sure about concern about American education system.
5.) What is your opinion on college admissions in Japan and the U.S.?
I agree to many people who say difficult to get in schools in Japan but easy to graduate from. Under the environment where number of children is diminishing easy-to-get in and difficult-to-get-out admission policy may perform well.
6.) Please leave any comments you may have about Japanese and American schools.
I prefer Japanese elementary schools and American graduate schools. For young children, discipline is very important. Emphasizing freedom too much might lead them to arrogant and defiant attitude.
But in Japanese colleges and universities, Academic sides of education are too much emphasized and students cannot learn how they can apply their knowledge and skills outside their schools.
